The Origin of Tapas
Several stories emerged regarding the origin of tapas, which are a part of the folklore:
It is told that King Alfonso X, el Sabio or "the Wise One," made sure taverns served wine accompanied by someting to eat, so the wine would not go straight to the clients' heads.
Another story claims while on a long trip, King Alfonso had stopped to rest in the town of Ventorillo del Chato in the province of Cádiz, & he ordered a glass of jerez or sherry. There was a gusty wind, so the inn keeper served him his glass of sherry covered by a slice of ham to prevent the sherry from getting dirty. King Alfonso apparently liked it, and when he asked for a second glass, he requested another tapa or "cover" just like the first.

Fernando Gallegos is from Monterrey, Mexico, but his family is from Spain, and specifically from Galicia. After graduating from the Art Institute's culinary program, he formed his own restaurant consulting company and met his business partner, Randy Branch, who was running Phil's Place. A couple of months ago, they opened La Tapa Tapa Restaurant & Lounge (3202 Marina Bay Dr., suite J, Kemah, 281-334-7445). "We wanted something different from the heavily populated Mexican or fried seafood restaurants in the area, something that was healthier and had reasonable prices, where people could enjoy lots of small and different dishes," says Gallegos. "We've done no advertising yet, so everyone who has come in has done so because of word of mouth. People are really liking the experience and are telling all their friends."
Branch currently resides in Louisiana, but comes in every Thursday to ensure things are working the way he wants them to. "We're particularly pleased with the fact that we are seeing many families and large parties come in, and many of them are return customers. Ever since we banned smoking, we have attracted many new customers as well."
A recent Cafe Bites visit found a decor done in typical Spanish colors, red and black, and a remarkably authentic tapas menu larger than any other in Houston, with 30 or so cold tapas and close to 40 hot tapas, plus paella. The extensive menu features quite a few specialized items such as morcilla, or blood sausage, and mollejas, or sweetbreads.

La Tapa Tapa Restaurant Review: Modern Latin Cuisine
July 23, 2009 by Michelle Devon
Spanish and Latin Cuisine in the Houston, Texas Area!
Tapa tapa is a Spanish phrase that literally translated means, "The cover covers." Tapa means 'cover'. La Tapa Tapa explains on their websites that the La Tapa Tapa Restaurant concept has a long history dating back to King Alfonso X, who declared that taverns should serve something to eat with wine, so the alcohol didn't go to the drinker's heads. There is also a story about the same king, in which he was served a glass of liquor covered with a piece of ham to prevent debris from a storm from blowing into his drink, and he liked it so much he asked for another drink with a tapa, or cover.
Regardless of the origin of the La Tapa Tapa restaurant concept, the concept is simple: appetizers, small samplings of different types of Latin and Spanish cuisine, served with a full bar from sangria to Spanish wine, and other spirited beverages.
La Tapa Tapa Location and Decor
When I first went to La Tapa Tapa, located in League City, Texas (but with a location in Kemah, Texas as well), I was impressed with the décor. Inside this small shopping strip was an even smaller hole in the wall restaurant, with a fancy entrance, proudly displaying a gorgeous rack of wine bottles. Upon entering the restaurant through the second door, red, black and gray swept up to meet my eyes. The décor was elegant and felt 'expensive'.
On the walls, Spanish paintings were hung, and cloth decorations adorned the ceiling, separating areas of the dining room. Along the far wall were tall-topped booths, and in the center aisles where cherry-looking wooden glazed tables, with black metal chairs. Atop the tables were wine glasses, black cloth napkins, and well-placed place settings.
La Tapa Tapa Menu and Drinks
When we were seated, the menus passed out, we each ordered a glass of house sangria. The prices on the menu seemed reasonable, with most tapas being between $5-8.00 each. Now, what's important to keep in mind is that the tapas on the menu are appetizers, not full meals, so while the prices do seem reasonable, you're not going to fill up on ordering just one of these tapas.

MY REVIEW: My husband and I have lived in the south shore area for a while now, and somehow missed this place until the other night. A friend recommended it, and we decided to give it a try on a random Thursday evening for dinner.
First impression, this place has a beautiful ambiance! When we saw the white table cloths we were afraid we might be under dressed, but we were made to feel welcomed and fit right in. The up-beat music actually gives it a warm more relaxed feeling.
My husband and I love to try different wines, and we had an adorable little blonde haired waitress(I cant remember her name right now) who went over the wine list and made suggestions after we decided what we were in the mood for. Turns out, her suggestions were so well liked by my husband and I both, that we decided to go to S*pec's after leaving and try to find the wines by the bottle! GREAT wine selection here!
As for the food...I stuck to traditional tapas and followed the recommendations of our waitress since the menu is so extensive. The fried avocado with cheese and shrimp, and the shredded beef in red wine sauce was amazing! My husband actually let our waitress "surprise him" by picking out his entree. She chose a fillet that my husband claims was one of the best hes had in a long time, so he was very pleased. We finished with the Tres Leches which I am going to say is hands down the best in Houston, and we eat out ALOT since I dont do much cooking anymore :)
All together we spent about $100...each had a couple glasses of amazing wine, phenomenal food, and the service was timely and friendly. It was a great night and we will definitely be back for the live music and lounge nights!
